A Sumatran born photographer 1970. In 1990 he took up a photography course in Bandung. From 1993 through 1998 he worked as a photographer for the widely known HAI youth magazine as well as for the late Fotomedia Magazine,
Jakarta. In 2000-2001, He was a photo editor for the late Latitudes Magazine in Bali. Since 2004 untill 2010 He joined JiwaFoto Agency. After having graduated from his journalistic studies at the Dr. Soetomo Institute in Jakarta in 1995, Shamow’el
Rama Surya published a photo essay book "Yang Kuat Yang Kalah" ("The Strong Ones Are The Beaten Ones"), published by Fotomedia in 1996. Other photo essays include a report on the East Kalimantan, Borneo --forest fires-- and which was shown an occasion of the
Bieler Fototage '98. His work on the "Yogyakarta Street Mythology" was exhibited at the Nikon Image House Gallery in Kusnacht, Switzerland in 2000. Rated "Photographer of the Year 1997" by the German fotoMAGAZIN. "Bali Living in Two Worlds" in Museum der Kulturen,
